What is VLC Media Player?
VLC Player is a free, open source multimedia player developed by VideoLan and launched in 2001. The popularity that VLC media player enjoys lately is confirmed by the over 300 million downloads since November 2009. This popularity comes from several key features of the application.
At first would be the support for the majority of audio and video formats available at the moment. In addition, VLC uses its own codecs and runs on virtually any computer with Windows operating system installed, Mac OS X, Linux, BSD, Solaris BeOS or MorhpOS. You no longer have to search on the internet codec packages which often have errors or compatibility problems.
Secondly, VLC is a very easy to use audio – video player. The common interface of the program is intuitive, simple and I guess everybody can watch movies without facing difficulties. Plus you don’t have to know English, French or any other foreign language because this program is translated in many languages and you can find your native one. The menus are simple and you have immediate access to computer files or network streams. In addition you can apply different audio or video special effects, bookmarks or plugins and extensions.
If you get bored quickly and want a special interface enter here and download for free any skin you like from the 100 available. Also, VLC offers you the possibility to create your own skins with the help of an Editor.
Finally, VLC media player includes a large number of free libraries for encoding and decoding, being the first video player capable to run encrypted DVDs on Linux. The application has support for various streaming protocols. Thus, VLC can be used as a server and client for playing and receiving video streams from the network, with full support for IPv4 and IPv6.
Unlike the KMPlayer that I use most often, VLC player consumes a bit more resources, but I think is within normal range for this kind of applications.
There are many APIs that can connect to VLC and can use the facilities offered by it. Also on Windows and Linux, VLC can run as a plugin for Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera and Google Chrome browsers. The application allows users to see Quick Time, Windows Media, MP3, Ogg files included in websites without installing any additional programs. Personally I liked VLC more as a video player than a audio player, where I still prefer Winamp, but if you don’t have nothing else, VLC will do.
I hope I managed to convince you to download VLC player from the Internet and install it on your computer. Even it is a free multimedia player, it has a lot to offer compared to other applications of this kind.
