How to have a MP3 as a ringtone on the Iphone 3Gs?

Recently I bought the Iphone 3Gs and was really excited, however, I was extremely disappointed with the selection of ringtones. I wanted to use a mp3 as a ringtone, so i searched on the internet and tried, Iringer and changing the name of the track converted from m4a to m4r and neither work.

Please help.
