First things to do with Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope?
I am totally new to Linux, and I have just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a partition alongside a Windows 7 RC partition. I am hoping to use Ubuntu when I’m running on battery power, as I have heard it is much easier on battery life. As far as what I want to achieve while doing this, I am hoping to use Ubuntu to:
1.) View .pdf files
2.) Listen to my music library
3.) Office functions (this one I know I can use OpenOffice for).
Do you guys have any recommendations on any other programs I need to download to be able to view .pdf files and for the necessary codecs to listen to .mp3 files? If you could post links that would be greatly appreciated!
Also, are there any tweaks or “fixes” to the system you guys do right away after installing a fresh copy? For instance with windows you can change your startup entries and several other settings to optimize performance, anything like this in Ubuntu? Thanks for all the help!
1. PDF files can be read by default using the Document Viewer. When you click on a pdf online (or in your file structure), it is set to open by default.
2. Two popular music players are Rhythmbox (comes default) and Amarok, which you can download through the Add/Remove Applications or through Synaptic. I use Amarok only because I actually like the look and feel, and it will sync playlists to my iRiver Clix mp3 player.
3. I am pure Open Office in Ubuntu, and then on the Windows side at work now too. You can always save files as .doc, .xls, and .ppt in OO when you save.
The best thing to do for codecs is just try to open an .mp3 file, and it will usually prompt you to download those necessary.
For flash, I would go to adobe.com, and go to the Flash player download. They have a .deb file for Ubuntu that works well.
You’re running Ubuntu–no need to optimize! It is optimized!! (-: I always do the Flash thing, but otherwise, you are good!
