The Mp3 Player Market

What is the best MP3 player on the market? Why?

I am buying one for the first time(don’t laugh!) and want the best player without having to take out a second mortgage to get it. Any recommendations?

The iPod nanos are actually very reliable — Ars Technica did a review on the iPod Nano (http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/nano.ars/)where they assaulted it with these tests before it finally died:

- Dropped the Nano 20ft while jogging, still worked.
- Dropped it out of a car window at 10mph, still worked.
- Dropped it out of a car window at 30mph, still worked.
- Dropped it again at 50mph, still worked.
- Dropped it from 9ft high, screen stopped working — still played music.
- Ran it over with a car — TWICE — screen still didn’t worked, however it STILL played music.

The Nano finally died after it was thrown fourty feet into the air and dropped. I’ve got an iPod nano (black 4GB) and I absolutely LOVE it. It holds my music, and it sounds great, plus it’s already worked through a few droppings of it’s own.

If you’re more value-centric, you might want to try for a 2GB/1GB nano or a competing flash player. If you plan to not abuse it as much, you could get a video iPod OR a competing HD player such as the ones from iRiver or Samsung.
